Long before the compass was invented, the Vikings sailed their ships as far as Iceland, Greenland and Russia. The so-called "sun stones", transparent stones made of calcite, served them as navigation aids. As an amulet, the "Viking Compass" consists of the Icelandic symbol "Vegvísir" in the middle and the runic alphabet around it.
